German Embassy in Islamabad Streamlines Work Visa Application Process
German Embassy in Islamabad Expands Work Visa Services and Moves to Digital Portal
The German Embassy in Islamabad has announced major updates to its work visa application process, aiming to improve accessibility and eliminate long waiting periods for Pakistani nationals. The Embassy has closed all existing waiting lists and now encourages applicants to begin their visa applications through the Consular Services Portal.
By using the online platform digital.diplo.de/visa, applicants can complete a step-by-step questionnaire, upload documents, and ensure their applications are fully prepared before scheduling an in-person visit. This change is expected to increase efficiency, reduce processing time, and boost the overall number of visas issued.
Online Applications Now Open for All Work Visa Categories
Pakistani applicants can now apply online for various German work visa categories, including:
- Highly Skilled Employment
- EU Blue Card
- Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
- Self-Employment
- Recognition of Foreign Qualifications
While in-person appointments remain mandatory for biometric submissions, identity verification, and fee payments, the digital process ensures a smoother and faster path for applicants.
Germany to Eliminate Waiting Lists Through Digitization
The Embassy’s new digital approach aims to completely eliminate waiting lists, previously a major bottleneck for visa seekers in Pakistan. With increased automation and better document pre-checks, the Embassy can now process a significantly higher number of applications than before.
This move aligns with Germany’s broader strategy to attract skilled international workers amid growing labor shortages in critical sectors.
Over 80,000 Work Visas Issued in 2024 So Far
In the first half of 2024, Germany issued over 80,000 work visas, of which around 40,000 were granted to skilled professionals—a rise of 3,000 compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Federal Foreign Office.
The demand for foreign workers continues to grow. A report by the German Economic Institute (IW) highlights that Germany currently faces a shortfall of around 570,000 workers, impacting productivity across several industries.
Key Sectors Facing Labor Shortages in Germany:
- Transportation & Logistics
- Manufacturing & Construction
- Healthcare & Nursing
- Engineering & Skilled Trades
- Information Technology (IT)
Germany's digital visa reforms reflect its urgent need to bridge workforce gaps and maintain economic growth by attracting talent from countries like Pakistan.
